Introduction and Bio

Hello World!

My name is Ashley Thompson and it is only clear that you have come to this blog to find out about me and my internship!

Well here is some basic knowledge about me that I promise is not the same as my Resume (well maybe just a little!)

  • I am from Stanton, California; but I say I am from Anaheim because people know that area better as Disneyland and I can see the fireworks from my room.
  • I am a transfer student from Washington State University and left due to the snow and the better degree opportunity at Arizona State University. Plus Arizona has the better weather and is closer to home. By the way my degree is Public Service and Public Policy with a concentration in Business.
  • My future career goal is to work in an industry that impacts the public in a positive aspect either in the department of regulatory or government affairs. The second option is to work for a university in their counseling services in any given major.
  • I am a Girl Scout of 13 years and very proud of that fact. The organization gave me confidence as well as the ability to travel the world. Just recently my four Girl Scout sisters and I went to Europe (London, Paris, and Italy) as a promise we made to each other. The promise was that if we stayed together till the end and graduated from high school we would save up enough to travel together... and guess what, we made it happen.
So now about my internship. My internship is with HealthCare Talent and they are a scholarship agency that places students in stable and legitimate healthcare related positions. I was placed at CalOptima, A public healthcare agency in the state of California that serves those in Medicare and Medical. Within the company I was placed within the Health Education and Disease Management, but work with different departments within the company. The goals from my internship are the following:
  • Develop an understanding of the importance of public service is in the field of healthcare to an underserved and diverse population that would influence my future care choices.
  • To witness processes within a large business including the outcome and as well the actions required to make it more efficient if possible.
  • Challenge my current knowledge and professional skills in hopes of fostering even more development as well as creating a space for general learning.

  1. Hi Ashley!

I was a Girl Scout too! For about as long as you were. It was a huge part of who I was, and even though I am no longer involved I still consider it to be a driving force behind the person I am today. I am hoping that after I graduate I can get a job with them. I've lived in Phoenix all my life and wish I could transfer to Washington State, but I think like you I would be sick of the snow after only a week or so....
I look forward to following your internship!

  2. Hello Ashley,

I do not have any experience being a Girl Scouts but I do love to purchase cookies from the Girl Scouts outside my local grocery store :) I have lived in Phoenix my whole life and have only traveled to California a hand full of times. I would have no idea where Stanton is but I know exactly where Disneyland is!

In regards to your internship, I think you are have picked a very interesting field of study. Making sure that everyone has healthcare is not an easy task! I am in the process of conducting research on homelessness among the LGBTQ community and every article that I have come across expresses a need for healthcare within the LGBTQ community, especially for homeless individuals. I would consider this group of individuals to be the "underserved and diverse population" mentioned above.

I'm interested to see how your internship goes. Best wishes!

  3. Ashley,

My future goal is to also make an impact on the public in a positive aspect. I really like your second option in working with a university’s counseling service. Glancing over your blogs, I think you will do a great job in this area.
Additionally, that is super cool how you have been a Girl Scout for 13 years. That is a long commitment in something, which obviously comes to show your passion and dedication for it. It sounds so much fun getting to travel with your Girl Scout sisters to these beautiful places.
It sounds like you have a great path ahead. I wish you the best of luck in all you do.

    -Denise
